Citizen Soldiers: The Liverpool Territorials in the First World War, McCartney, Helen B., Cambridge University Press 2005, ISBN 0-521-84800-8. This work, the outcome of a PhD thesis, concentrates on the two 'class' battalions of the Liverpool infantry Territorials (ie the King's Liverpool Regiment) at the time of the First World War, the 10th (Liverpool Scottish) and the 6th (Liverpool Rifles). Dr McCartney provides a social sketch of the city prior to 1914 and uses a wide range of sources, many from the Liverpool Scottish Museum Trust, to investigate the relationships between officers and men and attitudes to trench warfare and command.
