Macdonald Diary

Extracts from the Edited Diaries of Frank McDonald, 2nd/10th (Scottish) Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment)

March 1917 Frank McDonald serves with the 2nd Battalion, going to France and Belgium in early 1917 and returning to England to be commissioned later that year. He joined the 1st Battalion in October 1918 (which had by then amalgamated with the 2nd Battalion) in time for the final advance. His diary is a version which he prepared after the Great War in typescript from original diaries and other papers. It was then bound in book form (which is reflected in the difficulty in copying the edges of pages nearest the spine) with some wartime sketches and post-war photographs. He died on 10th February 1977.

The extracts shown refer to a period whe the 2nd Battalion had been on active service in the trenches for a month. It had left England at the end of February 1917. This had been McDonald's first experience of active service. The battalion moved into the Bois Grenier sub-section, about two or three miles South of Armentieres. Four pages have been included. The diary also includes a harrowing account of the gassing of civilians in Armentieres (not reproduced here)
