Historical detail - Scottish Wood

The Colonel of The
Highlanders, Brigadier The Honourable H B H E Monro CBE will visit the Liverpool
Scottish family on Sunday, 13th July 2003, and will perform the short opening ceremony
of blessing and dedication to 'Scottish Wood' at Altcar Range at 3 pm.
If you are intending to be present please read on (particularly 'Notification')......
All friends and members of the
Liverpool Scottish and their families are welcome and the event will be followed
by a barbecue at no charge.
Notification of Attendance. This
is the Liverpool Scottish and not the Feeding of the Five Thousand. The
barbeque has to be planned on the basis of estimated numbers. It will help
greatly to have notification of attendance (names and numbers) in advance.
This should be done to Senior WO/NCO or to relevant Association Secretary. If
in doubt - CONTACT. For convenience some contacts are
below.
Dress For those
serving: Review Order (white feet), medals, canes for serving officers;
Suits/Blazers/regimental ties/medals/Brigadier Monro has
asked for maximum kilts please!
Wet Weather: Bring
an umbrella or a coat. The BBQ will be at Red Rose Canteen if wet.
The co-ordinator for the
event is Colonel CTJ Harris TD JP. Although the 'Scottish Wood'
project was initially instigated and funded through the activities of the
Liverpool Scottish Museum, this Family Day is being organised through the
Liverpool Scottish Council. Families are welcome, indeed encouraged but we
do need notice!
Parking and Assembly: Please
allow some time (say 15 minutes) to walk up to the Wood (near Battery
Cottage) from the car park. It is understood that the car park called the
'Railhead Car Park' is to be used and the Red Rose Car Park should only be
used by those going to the red Rose to meet Brigadier Monro. Those
who have difficulty in walking should drive up to C Range Car Park, just
before the Ammunition Compound after leaving the Red Rose. Those who need to drive up to the
Wood might consider putting a folding chair in their car boot. Please park
sensibly and do not park on the grass verges (unless directed to do so). A
lot of work goes into maintaining the Altcar Estate.

Scottish
Wood remembers the
WW1 battlefield feature given that name by the Liverpool Scottish in 1915.
It lies 4 km SW of the town of Ieper (Ypres). It was used as a rest area
between Dickebusch and the front line area at Vormezeele. Diaries record
that the battalion adopted a 'proprietorial air' to the Wood though it was
not the most tranquil of places.
The small plantation at Altcar has
been funded by individuals in the memory of various members of the Liverpool
Scottish who have served through the past century. It is not a memorial
for those who have died in battle. We have decided therefore that the
playing of a lament would be inappropriate. There will be a book with
details of those remembered held by the Museum; it is hoped that a copy will
be placed in the small display held at the Altcar Range Office. It
is not too late to subscribe: contact Ian
